Why I See People This Way

Photography begins with observation.

Oceanlight Studios is a Southern California photographer specializing in surprise proposals, intimate weddings and emotionally honest portraits in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Ventura, Malibu and surrounding coastal communities.

Long before I photographed weddings, surprise proposals and families, I worked as a documentary photographer, visual journalist and filmmaker. That experience taught me to pay attention—to the relationships between people, to the character of a place and to the small, unplanned gestures that reveal how a moment truly felt.

It also taught me to prepare.

Careful planning creates the freedom to be fully present. Whether I am helping someone choose a discreet place to propose or preparing to photograph an intimate wedding, I think through the location, light and logistics beforehand so that, when the moment arrives, the people in front of me can simply be themselves.

For a surprise proposal, that might mean finding a location that feels personal, scouting it in advance, determining the best time and light, and coordinating where each of us will be without giving away the surprise. Once the question has been asked, there is time to celebrate together and create relaxed engagement portraits while the emotion is still fresh.

The preparation matters because the moment matters.

Years from now, I do not simply want you to remember what your wedding looked like, where your proposal took place or how your family appeared at this particular moment in your lives.

I want you to remember how it felt.

That is why I photograph.
