Montecito Family Portraits for a 75th Birthday Celebration
For the first time in twelve years, this entire family was together in one place. They had gathered in Montecito for a family vacation and to celebrate their father’s 75th birthday—a major milestone and a rare opportunity to make photographs of everyone together.
Rather than asking the family to coordinate another outing during an already special trip, they decided to have the portraits made at the house they were renting. It kept the experience simple and allowed the photography to become part of the celebration instead of another destination on the itinerary.
Family portraits at a Montecito vacation home
A beautiful family portrait does not always require traveling to a beach, park or formal venue. A vacation home can provide a meaningful and comfortable setting, especially when several generations and multiple households are involved.
When I arrived, I walked through the property with the family representative and considered several possible settings for the portraits. Together, we selected the background that worked best for the photographs the family wanted to create.
We began with everyone together, making the full family portrait that had become possible after twelve years apart. From there, we photographed the smaller family groups and the relationships within the larger gathering. We made portraits of the birthday honoree with his grandchildren, with each of his children and with the different branches of the family.
Those smaller combinations are an important part of an extended-family session. The large group photograph records the gathering as a whole, while the individual portraits show the relationships that give the family its character.
A portrait session that became part of the celebration
A successful family portrait session is a collaboration. I can guide the group, organize the different combinations and watch for the moments that matter, but the family’s participation and willingness to have fun bring the photographs to life. This family completely embraced the experience.
After we finished the planned portraits, an impromptu birthday song turned into dancing and laughter. I kept photographing as the celebration unfolded, capturing candid moments of everyone enjoying this rare time together.
The family later shared that everyone looked natural, each person felt good about how they appeared in the photographs, and the session became one of the highlights of their trip. They had expected family portraits might feel like a slog. Instead, the experience was relaxed, lively and genuinely fun.
That is what I want a family session to feel like: thoughtfully organized without becoming stiff, and relaxed enough for real personalities and unexpected moments to emerge. The finished photographs include the portraits everyone hoped to make, along with the laughter, dancing and connection that could never have been planned.
