Some moments deserve careful planning so they can feel completely effortless.

That was the goal for this surprise proposal at Butterfly Beach in Santa Barbara on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Long before the couple arrived, the proposal had already taken shape. Together with the proposer, we discussed his vision for the evening, selected the location, and carefully planned the details. I scouted Butterfly Beach to find the ideal setting and time, purchased flowers, and coordinated everything behind the scenes so that when they arrived, there was nothing left to manage.

He could simply be present with the woman he loved.

The proposal itself lasted about five wonderful minutes—long enough for the world around them to quietly fade into the background. When she said "yes," something unexpected happened. A family watching from the bluff above the beach began cheering, and others nearby joined in with congratulations. For a few moments, complete strangers became part of the celebration.

I love moments like these because they remind me that joy has a way of bringing people together.

Photography begins with observation, but it also begins with trust.
