Congratulations to Maëlle and Djamel on their engagement in Manhattan Beach, California.

Djamel wanted to propose on the beach at sunset, surrounded by their family. To help him create a meaningful surprise, we planned the location, timing and sequence of events together before their vacation began.

Before the proposal, I scouted the beach to find the exact place where he would ask Maëlle to marry him. I studied the evening light, the surroundings and the available camera angles.

When Maëlle arrived with her family and Djamel joined her, I was already in position. Under the warm light of a Southern California summer sunset, Djamel got down on one knee—and Maëlle said yes.

Photographing—and Recording—the Proposal

Along with photographing the proposal, I recorded the moment on video.

This was not a separately produced fine-art film or a staged recreation. It was a direct record of the proposal itself, captured as part of my coverage so Maëlle and Djamel could see the moment unfold again.

Photography preserves individual expressions and gestures with extraordinary detail. Video adds movement, timing and atmosphere: the approach, the moment of recognition, the proposal and the celebration that follows.

By working discreetly and anticipating what was about to happen, I was able to photograph and record the proposal without interrupting it or asking the couple to repeat anything for the cameras. The experience remained entirely theirs.

Their family was there to share the celebration. Afterward, while the happiness of the moment was still fresh, we created a relaxed set of portraits of Maëlle and Djamel together, along with photographs of the couple with their family on the beach.

Planning a Surprise Proposal in Manhattan Beach

A surprise proposal may last only a few minutes, but thoughtful preparation can make those minutes feel effortless.

We coordinate the location, timing and logistics before the day arrives. When necessary, I scout the site in advance to evaluate the light, choose the strongest photographic perspective and determine where I can wait without revealing the surprise.

This preparation is especially helpful when you are planning from outside Southern California or arranging a proposal during a trip. You do not need to know every detail before contacting me. I can help you choose a location and develop a simple plan that feels natural for the two of you.

Your Proposal, as It Happened

My approach is documentary and centered on genuine emotion. A proposal does not need to become a performance for the camera. My role is to observe, anticipate and preserve the expressions, movements and reactions that make the experience personal.

For couples who want more than still photographs, video coverage of the proposal itself can be added to the experience. It provides an immediate, moving record of the moment without turning the day into a separate film production.
